Currents Fishing App ("Currents", "we", "our") is developed by Aidan McConnon. This policy explains how the app handles your data.

Summary

Currents is an on-device-first app. By default, your data stays on your device — no account is required and we do not track you. Currents includes an optional social networking feature (the "Community"). If, and only if, you choose to join it, a limited set of data syncs through Apple's CloudKit so that friends you connect with can see it. You can leave the Community at any time. We never sell your personal information.

Data Stored on Your Device

All data you create in Currents — including catches, spots, gear, trips, and photos — is stored locally on your device in a SQLite database. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to back it up to iCloud, or opt into the Community (see below).

Optional Community & Social Networking

Currents offers an opt-in Community feature with leaderboards, friends, and spot sharing. It is off by default — nothing described in this section happens unless you tap "Join the Community" in the app. If you join, the following data is stored in the public database of Apple's CloudKit (in the app's iCloud container) so that the feature can work across devices and friends:

This data is stored in Apple's CloudKit and is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. Community data is used only to provide the social features you opted into — it is never sold or used for advertising. You can stop sharing and leave the Community at any time.

Location Data

Currents requests access to your location to show your position on the map, provide local fishing forecasts, and tag catches with coordinates. Location data is stored only on your device and is never transmitted to any server. You can revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings.

Camera and Photos

Currents requests access to your camera and photo library so you can attach photos to catch entries. Photos are stored locally on your device. They are not uploaded or shared with any third party.

iCloud Backup & Sync

If you choose to use the iCloud backup feature, a copy of your database is stored in your personal iCloud Drive account. Separately, you may enable optional iCloud Sync (off by default) to keep your catches and spots in sync across your own devices; this uses the private database of Apple's CloudKit in your personal iCloud account. Both are governed by Apple's iCloud terms and privacy policy, and we do not have access to your iCloud data — it never reaches any server we operate.

Analytics and Tracking

Currents does not include any analytics SDKs, tracking pixels, advertising frameworks, or crash reporting tools. We collect zero telemetry, and we do not track you across apps or websites. The optional Community feature (above) stores only the data you choose to share, and is never used for advertising or profiling.

Third-Party Services

Currents may use Apple's WeatherKit to provide weather and forecast data. These requests are handled by Apple and are subject to Apple's Privacy Policy. No personally identifiable information is sent with these requests.

Children's Privacy

Currents does not knowingly collect any personal information from children. The optional Community feature requires an iCloud account (subject to Apple's age requirements); with it left off, the app collects no data from any user.
